Chapter Twelve

The three of us are seated at Mitchell’s desk, to-go containers in front of us with the remnants of the hero sandwiches, coleslaw, and potato chips we ordered.

“Did Webber stick around after he killed Jessica Marsh?” I ask Leo.

He shakes his head. “We found the place where he was staying, but it was already abandoned. To make matters worse, Webber used a fake name and paid with cash, so we couldn’t even prove he was ever there.”

“What about DNA?” Mitchell asks.

“Webber wasn’t in the system. Since he was never convicted or even suspected of having murdered his nanny when he was thirteen, his prints weren’t on file or anything.”

“Okay, but that means he most likely was holed up somewhere. Can you describe where he was staying in New York? Maybe we’ll think of a similar place here to check out. Oh, and do you remember the alias he used back then?”

“He was staying in a budget hotel. One of those dives that people sometimes use by the hour.”

Gross. “I’m guessing the maid service came through before you found the place.”

“You’re correct. Any trace of Webber was literally wiped clean.”

“What about the name he booked the room under?”

“Alexander Simpson.” Leo pauses like we’re supposed to pick up on something he just hinted at.

“What?” Mitchell asks.

“You apparently don’t know Webber’s mother’s name.”

“No. What was it?” I ask.

“Alexandria Sampson.”

“So close but not the same,” Mitchell says. “It probably made you and O’Reilly look like you were pulling at straws if you said he used that alias for the purpose of playing off his mother’s maiden name.”

“Bingo!”

I never realized the extent to which Webber humiliated Leo and O’Reilly. This is so much worse than I thought.

“I stopped consulting with the police after that trial. No one wanted me to come near their cases anymore.”

And the station didn’t want O’Reilly associated with them anymore either. “Well, maybe we can help fix that.” I turn to Mitchell. “Let’s look up all the cheap motels and hotels in the area and then start calling around for an Alexandria Sampson.”

“You don’t think he’d really use the same alias, do you?” Mitchell asks as he starts searching on his computer.

“I do,” Leo says. “I think Webber is daring Detective O’Reilly and me to catch him. He’ll follow the same pattern whenever possible.” He looks over at O’Reilly at her desk. “I wish she’d agree to work with me again. Believe it or not, we used to get along really well.”

I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have Detective O’Reilly depend on psychic visions for answers. It’s the complete opposite of what I know about her. She looks up briefly, but the second our gazes meet, she dips her head down toward her computer again.

“I’m pulling up a list of hotels and motels,” Mitchell says. “I’ll need to make the phone calls since neither of you has a badge.”

“Actually, I have a better idea. You said you’re making a list?” I ask him, and he smiles.

“What am I missing here?” Leo asks, looking back and forth between us.
